Naturally derived or synthetic Dermal Fillers are used to correct a variety of tell tale signs of aging. From sagging skin, to the hollowing of areas (think under the eyes), to enhancing and plumping the shape of lips and cheeks, the purpose of a Dermal Filler is to increase volume or “fill” a depression in the face. Although quite different from BOTOX® injections in result, the two procedures are commonly used together to create a drastically younger looking face.

As the fat pads under our skin begin to shift, hollow areas, sagging and drooping of the skin are common points of concern.  Many people opt for dermal fillers to increase volume in areas such as nasal labia folds (“laugh lines”), upper cheek areas that begin to appear gaunt, the plumping of thin lips and the “filling in”  of scars from acne or injury.

Benefits and Side Effects

Dermal Fillers are an effective way to increase volume in sunken areas. Even when administrated by an experienced medical professional however, side effects may occur. The most common side effects of Dermal Fillers include:  slight bleeding at injection site along with redness, tenderness, bruising, and a “lumpy” appearance where injected. These signs may take up to one week to vanish completely. 

If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters and are getting injections around the mouth, filler injections may cause a break out. Taking an anti-herpes medication prior to treatment may help to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak. During your consultation, our Doctor will go over the risks and side effects associated with filler injections.

How Does It Work?

Fillers are a great anti-aging treatment option as they reduce the effects of skin that has lost or is losing collagen and elastin due to aging and other factors. There are various types of Dermal Fillers for specific areas of the face that work in different ways, however all fillers strive to achieve the same: to provide volume, create definition, reshaping and lifting of sunken areas.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Because Dermal Fillers are administered via injection, a slight pinch and burning may be experienced, however many patients feel minimal discomfort. Because the gauge of the needle is extremely thin, much smaller than a needle that would be used to draw blood for example; the process should be relatively painless. Minimal bruising may occur post-treatment; however our Doctor will go over post care during your initial consultation. 

Depending on the area injected and the type of filler being used, patients may find the procedure relatively painless to mildly uncomfortable. Treatments around the nose or lip areas are usually more painful due to the sensitivity of these areas.

Are Multiple Sessions Required?

Yes. Dermal Fillers require continuous treatments in order for treated area to maintain a plumped, youthful appearance. Results will last anywhere from six to twelve months, depending on the patient, area of treatment and the type of Dermal Filler you and your doctor have selected for your course of treatment.
