BOTOX® is made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum called “Botulinum Toxin”. Lines between the eyebrows, across the forehead and “crow’s feet” around the eyes can age us, making us look tired and older than we feel. With BOTOX®, a relatively pain-free, non surgical procedure, the skin around the eyes and forehead is smoothed, creating a more youthful and rested appearance free from lines and wrinkles. The affect can last four to six months before a “fading” of the result is seen.

Even when administered by an experienced physician, side effects from BOTOX® injections may still occur. The most common side effects post-treatment include: slight bleeding at injection site along with redness tenderness and bruising, headache, nausea, fever or flu like symptoms. How Does It Work?

BOTOX® provides dramatic results on both “dynamic” wrinkles (wrinkles that appear while you’re moving your face, such as when you laugh) as well as “static” wrinkles (lines that appear even when the face is at rest). Small concentrations of the Botulinum Toxin (“BOTOX®”) are injected into the area of concern, which in turn prevents signals from the nerve cells from reaching receptor muscles. As a result, the muscles in the treated area are left without instructions to contract, therefore becoming paralyzed.
In order for muscles to contract, nerves release a chemical messenger called Acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter), at the junction where the nerve endings meet the muscle cells. The chemical messenger attaches to receptors on the muscle cells which causes the muscle cells to contract or shorten. When botulinum toxin is injected, the release of acetylcholine is prevented along with the ability of the muscle cells to contract.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Because BOTOX® is administered via injection, a slight pinch and burning may be experienced, however many patients feel minimal discomfort. Because the gauge of the needle is extremely thin, much smaller than a needle that would be used to draw blood for example; the process should be relatively painless. Minimal bruising may occur post-treatment; however your medical professional will go over post care during your initial consultation.

Are Multiple Treatments Required?

Yes. BOTOX® injections are required every three to six months depending on the patient, the areas being treated, and the type of injection you and your doctor have selected for your course of treatment.
